Adam was lost in thought as he sat on the bench, gazing at
the sea. Lately, he felt as if a heavy burden had been lifted from his
shoulders. He felt as light as a feather". It was good for him to think while watching the sea. It was his
son's graduation today. He was smiling as he headed to the bus stop to catch
graduation. Life was actually so beautiful, but it had to go through a lot of
trouble. While watching outside on the bus, he plunged into the past again...
It had been
almost ten years since he was released from prison for good behavior. Working
three jobs at the same time... Struggling with all his might to pay off all his
debts... Struggling to keep his family together... It was as if everything
happened in one fell swoop. During this period, his family became closer to
each other and supported Adam in his struggle.
The pivotal moment for Adam, the one that awakened him from his deep sleep and lifted him from where he had fallen, was a training program he attended in prison. The trainer asked, "When making choices, what guides you – your desires or your needs?" Until then, these were concepts Adam hadn't even distinguished. The crucial reason behind his time within the four walls, the disintegration of his family, and the stigma of being a thief was his inability to differentiate between wants and needs.
In the beginning, he had a promising career, a beautiful home, and a happy family. He didn’t know at the time that when he got promoted at his job and become financial manager, they left the modest neighborhood where they had lived for years and moved to a more luxurious neighborhood, seemed like the beginning of their problems.
They had moved to their new home with dreams and sent their
son to a private school. We
suffered, they thought, so that he could receive better education in good
conditions and be better equipped for life.
At first, everything was going very well, but over time, their expenses exceeded their income. During the summer vacation, his wife expressed a strong desire to go to the holiday village where their friends were going. Taking a week's vacation in that holiday village cost almost as much as a second-hand car. Adam couldn't remember how the idea of taking money from the company's funds had crossed his mind, but he thought, "I can always pay it back."
How did taking someone else's money without permission
seem normal to Adam?
In the following period, not only could he not replace that
money, but he took even more. The child's tablet, computer, phone, his wife's
clothes, bag, replacing old items at home – all were needs for adapting to
their new social circle. Adam did
not know at that time that as opportunities increase, people become
incompetent.
The actions he took eventually led him to prison, but it
turned out to be a life school for him. The training he attended there opened
up new horizons in his mind.
If only he could have distinguished between wants and
needs from the beginning, what kind of life would he have had?
He would probably
have continued to live in that modest neighborhood where neighborly relations
were low-key and sincere. He wouldn’t have spoiled his wife and child that
much. He would have been content with less achievements and gains. He
wouldn't have equated the satisfaction derived from life with quantities.
Continuing to
grieve over things that happened in the past wasn't enough to resolve them.
While he was in prison, he made a decision. Life had not ended yet. As long as he breathed, there was always hope to fix the mistakes and start life over.
Adam also shared
his decision to his wife and son who came to visit him. That day, a wave of
hope surrounded them all. Adam's imprisonment had worn them both out a lot.
His wife moved in with her mother, and she struggled to find a job and started
working during this period. Adam's decision for a fresh start increased their
belief that every hardship is surely followed by ease. What made it
easier to implement their decision was the release decision due to good
behavior. It was as if his life had been granted again. So much had changed in
the ten years since then...
Life always
asks a question: "What will you do now?" "With what is given to
you or what is taken from you."
"Even though
the mistakes made in the past put pressure on people to turn to what is right
today, the human will has the power to choose and do the right thing," he
thought to himself. He had witnessed this many times during that difficult
period they went through.
Adam was
startled by the sound coming from the megaphone, and was pulled out of his
thoughts at the speed of light. He had already arrived at the stop where he
would get off. As he got off the bus, there was a sense of ease in
knowing the comfort of learning from the past. He smiled and walked towards his son and wife...
